Course Format

In the new ACLS Provider ILT Course, precourse work is completed before the course so that students are prepared for the course. Precourse work includes the mandatory Precourse Self-Assessment, followed by video lessons.

The course is structured as follows:
   • Core concepts are presented online through interactive video lessons. Video lessons are completed before coming to class. Then Instructors lead discussions and case-based scenarios around a manikin during class.
   • The Instructor coaches students by using a feedback device as they practice CPR and ventilation skills.
   • The Instructor monitors as each student/team demonstrates skills proficiency as outlined in the skills testing checklist.
   • Students take the ACLS Provider Course Exam exam to confirm their understanding of core concepts.

Audience

The ACLS Course is designed for healthcare professionals who either direct or participate in the management of cardiopulmonary arrest or other cardiovascular emergencies. This includes personnel in emergency response, emergency medicine, intensive care, and critical care units such as physicians, nurses, and paramedics, as well as others who need an ACLS course completion card for jobs or other requirements.

HeartCode ACLS is the AHA’s blended learning delivery method for the AHA’s ACLS Course. HeartCode blended learning delivers quality resuscitation education regardless of where providers are located and gives them more control to complete the course at their own pace. Providers first complete the online portion of HeartCode ACLS and then complete a hands-on skills session with an AHA ACLS Instructor or on a simulation station. To enter the course, participants must complete a precourse self-assessment.

Access to the ACLS Provider Manual eBook (20-3100) is included with HeartCode ACLS. You will be able to access the Provider Manual from within the course.

Overview 

The goal of the PALS Provider Course is to improve outcomes for pediatric patients by preparing healthcare providers to effectively recognize and intervene in patients with respiratory emergencies, shock, and cardiopulmonary arrest by using high-performance team dynamics and high-quality individual skills. This course uses precourse preparation, didactic instruction, and active participation in learning stations and simulated cases.

Audience

The AHA’s PALS Course is for healthcare providers who either direct or participate in the management of respiratory and/or cardiovascular emergencies and cardiopulmonary arrest in pediatric patients. This includes personnel in emergency response, emergency medicine, intensive care, and critical care units such as physicians, nurses, paramedics, and others who need a PALS course completion card for a job or other requirements.

Course Content

Providers who take the PALS update course must be proficient in the following:

  • Be able to recognize a variety of heart rhythms
  • Be familiar with different types of airway management tools and how they are used
  • Know about the drugs commonly used in the PALS algorithms and flowcharts
  • Understand the Systematic Approach Algorithm and the “evaluate-identify-intervene” sequence
  • Performing child and infant CPR using oxygen delivery and airway management equipment 
  • Establishing intraosseous (IO) access and a method for giving rapid fluid boluses 
  • Using electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring 
  • Providing defibrillation/cardioversion 
  • Pediatric assessment: A systematic approach 
  • Medical management: 4 types of acute respiratory problems, 4 types of acute circulatory problems, and 4 types of acute cardiac problems, including cardiac arrest
  • Leadership: Communication and other important elements of team dynamics as they relate to resuscitation

In the Instructor-led course, students participate in simulated clinical scenarios and learning stations. Students work with an AHA BLS Instructor to complete BLS skills practice and skills testing. Students also complete a written exam. Audience

This course is for healthcare professionals who need to know how to perform CPR, as well as other lifesaving skills, in a wide variety of in-hospital and out-of-hospital settings.

Course Content

• High-quality CPR for adults, children, and infants
• The AHA Chain of Survival, specifically the BLS components
• Use of an AED
• Effective ventilation using a barrier device
• Importance of teams in multi-rescuer resuscitation and performance as an effective team member during multi-rescuer CPR
• Relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (choking) for adults and infants

Course Format

The initial Provider Course requires approximately 4 hours to complete, including skills practice and testing.

Renewal Course requires approximately 4 hours, including skills practice and skills testing.

100% classroom training means students are with an AHA instructor for their entire learning experienceThis course teaches basic life support skills for application in both in-facility and prehospital settings, with a focus on high-quality CPR, improvement of chest compression fraction, and high-performing team dynamics. The BLS Provider Course teaches rescue techniques for adults, children, and infants.

In the BLS Provider update Course, students will practice:

• High-quality BLS for adults, children, and infants • Use of an AED
• Effective ventilation using a barrier device
• Relief of foreign-body airway obstruction for adults, children, and infants
• High-performance teams

Course Format

To complete this course and receive your BLS course completion card, students must do the following:
• Participate in hands-on interactive demonstrations of high-quality CPR skills
• Pass the Adult CPR and AED Skills Test
• Pass the Infant CPR Skills Test • Score at least 84% on the exam

Course Completion Card

American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers Course electronic Completion Card is valid for two years. 

BLS Part 2 and 3 skills testing are the hands-on portions after completing Part 1 online. You must purchase Online Part 1 by going to https://shopcpr.heart.org/heartcode-bls. This must be completed before your skills testing class. You are required to bring your Part 1 certificate of completion with you.

Heartsaver CPR/AED First Aid Part 2&3 skills testing is the hands-on portion once you complete Part 1 online. You must purchase Online Part 1 by going to https://shopcpr.heart.org/heartsaver-first-aid-cpr-aed-online  

The Heartsaver Total course path of the Heartsaver® First Aid CPR AED Online course is taught in a blended learning format. Students must complete the online portion, followed by the hands-on skills session conducted by an American Heart Association Training Center Instructor. Students who complete the online course and skills session (sold separately), will receive a Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED Course Completion card, valid for two years.

Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED provides students with the highest quality training in the lifesaving skills of first aid, CPR, and the use of an AED. This course empowers students to act with confidence in the event of an emergency at work, at home, or in the community.

The Heartsaver Total – Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED Online is a comprehensive course path designed for those requiring training to meet OSHA or other regulatory agency requirements.

Union Volunteer Emergency Squad (UVES) engages in Community Health and Safety Initiatives. As the designated 9-1-1 Emergency Medical Service provider for the Town of Union, we are committed to improving the health and safety of our communities residents and visitors. 

To meet our commitment, UVES has five Nationally Certified Child Passenger Seat Technicians (CPST) who conduct free installation and inspection clinics for parents and caregivers. 

CPSTs are trained extensively in child passenger restraint systems inspection and installation, as well as providing education to parents and caregivers in proper use. CPSTs put their training to work at child passenger restraint fitting and inspection stations and events hosted throughout the community with the goal of eliminating injuries to children sustained in motor vehicle accidents.
